Indian Cement Industry overview

Indian Cement industry capacity is slated at 550 million tonnes and the second largest producer of cement in the world following China.  It is expected to reach 600 million tonnes by the year 2024. Infrastructure spending for smart cities and other highways will raise the cement demand, though the housing sector forms 67% of cement demand in India. Infrastructure forms around 13% demand, the commercial construction 11% and industry segment 9%. The industry is expected to add 56 million tonnes over the next 3 years to raise the capacity to 600+ million tonnes. A total of 188 large cement plants together account for 97 per cent of the total installed capacity in the country, while 365 small plants account for the rest. Of these large cement plants, 77 are located in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. The Indian cement industry is dominated by a few companies. The top 20 cement companies account for almost 70 per cent of the total cement production of the country.
