About the Company :
Lafarge entered the Indian market in 1999, through its cement business, with the acquisition of Tata Steel’s cement activity.
The company acquired a split-location cement plant in Sonadih (Chhattisgarh) and Jojobera (Jharkhand), with a total capacity of 1.73 mtpa, from Tata Steel Ltd in November 1999. In January 2001, it took over Raymond Industries Ltd’s 2.24-mtpa plant in Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh). The company’s major markets are West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Orissa. It is set up a 2.6-mtpa Greenfield integrated cement plant in Rajasthan. This was the first project outside the eastern region. The plant became operational by 2014 and will take Lafarge total cement capacity to around 10.9 mtpa. In 2015, the company had sold two of its units Sonadih and Jojobera plant to Birla Corp with a total capacity of 5.15 mtpa.
In June 2016, Nirma has acquired the cement plants for USD 1.4 billion.
